Gears of War 3 is set to be Microsoft's killer title for this holiday season. As such, Epic is going above and beyond in delivering as much as they can in every mode of the game.
Behind closed doors, Epic gave us a look at a piece of the campaign which followed Cole and Baird during the leviathan battle shown at Microsft's press event. The player controlled Cole, who was accompanied by Baird, Carmine, and Sam as they stormed on a group of savage Locust on a bridge. It was a short piece which ended rather humorously, but showed that this game, and the story behind it, is much bigger than Marcus and his daddy issues. It has been two years since the fall of Jacinto and the war is lost, and the only thing left to do is survive. This story effects every character in the game, and they're primed to show it all.
In addition to the campaign, some major work has been done on the brand-new Beast mode. Here, players can choose from a surprisingly large selection of Locust enemies and monsters, as they set out to kill groups of humans. Since we last saw this mode, though, some interesting changes have been made.
For starters, the character selection has been separated into unlockable classes. This includes groups like healers, explosives, melee, and more. To unlock the higher-grade characters, players must earn cash by racking up a high kill count, or being a team player. Do this enough, and you'll be able to purchase (with in-game currency, of course) the more destructive locust beasts like the Berserker and the Mini-Corpser. This adds a clever tactical layer of gameplay, as teams must choose what works best for each wave of humans, which gets more difficult with every round.
Gears is only a few short months away, and seeing Beast mode today definitely gets me anxious. Expect Gears of War 3 to drop on September 20th, 2011 exclusively for Xbox 360.
